Building anything together brings you closer, but only if you do it right. In the wrong circumstances, doing chores together can lead to family feuds. Fortunately, Col Western Sheds can help. We’ll get you an ‘assignment’ that is easy, practical, and fun. Our small garden sheds in Gosford can be installed in hours.
Getting the dimensions right
When you buy a shed from us, it comes in a flat pack with easy assembly instructions. You don’t need special tools – just a power drill, which you probably already have. We suggest waiting until the weather is right, because rain or strong wind could lead to injuries. Start your family project early, designating roles and deciding who does what.
Begin around the table, deciding the type of shed you want. They range from a metre to six metres, so pick a size that’s right for your yard. The ladies in the group can be asked to focus on aesthetics. They can pick the colour, roofing style (skillion, flat, gabled), door type (hinged, sliding), and additional features like shelves and skylights. These little touches make the shed more attractive.
Col Western staffers are available to install the garden shed for you, but seeing as this is a family bonding exercise, you probably want to do it yourself. The instructions in the pack are pretty detailed, and we have online video tutorials too. That said, if you get stuck, you can always give us a call for some guidance.
Lay the foundation
Whether you’re installing the shed yourself or having our people do it, you’ll have to do your own silicone sealing and floor slab. The dimensions of your slab are driven by the size of the shed. The slab (of poured concrete) should extend outside the base of the shed at least 100mm in all directions. Remember to give the slab enough time to dry and cure – that’s two to three days. Then after installing the shed, line the inner edges with silicone.
Your sealant prevents underground moisture from seeping into the shed, so you should apply it on all the corners and edges joining the walls to the floor. The sealant should only be applied inside the shed, not on the outside. It seals any gaps that may have appeared during construction, keeping your shed dry and adequately insulated. Celebrate your successful family DIY project with chilled drinks and BBQ or just call the pizza guy when you’re done.
