Your Main Considerations When Installing a New Dog Pen

Dog pens can be a great idea for the backyard if you don’t want your dog roaming free all the time. Perhaps you’ve got to build a new fence, or you have small children around, or simply don’t want them digging up the garden. But what should you think about before purchasing a dog pen? Here are the main considerations to take into account.

Is it big enough so they’re comfy?

How big is your dog? You will want your dog pen to be big enough so that they have some room to move around, stretch their legs a little, and just generally chill out. If dogs are cooped up in too small a pen for too long, then they can get anxious and start to freak out. It helps to have their favourite toys etc. inside so they can feel as at home as possible when they’re in their pen.

Will they be able to get out?

If your dog is akin to Houdini, then this is likely going to be your top consideration when looking at dog pens. Many designs are not built sturdy enough. This is an especially important consideration if you’re looking at building your own pen for them, as many people do. For instance, simple chicken wire may not last long with your dog if you are building your own coop.

Do they have somewhere to go if the weather gets bad?

Whether it’s stinking hot weather, or pouring with rain, your dog should not be out in the elements. This is how they can get very sick. Your dog pen should contain an undercover area where they can seek shelter from the elements in both winter and summer.

Your Main Considerations When Installing a New Dog Pen

What happens if you get another dog?

So, you’ve determined that one dog will be comfy in your pen, but what if another pooch turns up that you want to be a part of your family? Will the pen be large enough for two dogs to fit in comfortably? Will there be enough room in the covered area for the both of them? You may want to take this into consideration.

Are they safe?

Many people lock their dogs inside when they go out so to prevent theft. If you get yourself a dog pen, is it going to be secure from thieves? It should be strong, tough, and lockable if you’re looking to keep thieves out.

We have a number of dog pen designs available for dogs of all sizes. Each features a sheltered area and is built tough to keep them in. If you’d like to enquire about any of our pens, or a custom built dog pen, please get in contact with us.

  • I just want to advise you of the terrific service one of your shed builders provided to us when last week he built the shed we ordered through your Penrith office. Dave and his young helper provided first class workmanship, he was very polite, and the clean up was a pleasure compared to most other tradesmen. We are soon going to order a further shed via Penrith and I have no hesitation in recommending your products. Thank you Dave, and thank you to Col Western Sheds.
