What to Consider When Buying a Garden Shed in Sydney

The popularity of garden sheds in Australia rises and falls in waves but never really dies away. Garden sheds in Sydney are quite popular with hobbyists who like to get their hands dirty. Some of the most common reasons for setting up a garden shed are in support of small kitchen gardens or DIY projects.

Many people are love growing their own vegetables to cut down on costs and prevent chemical contaminants from getting into their food. Whatever your reason for getting a garden shed, there are a few things you should take into consideration before committing to a supplier.

1. Purpose

Your reason for setting up a garden shed is the main factor affecting its design, location, and size. You may only need a small space if the shed is mainly for the storage of garden tools. However, if you want it to double up as a workshop, you will need space to move around as well as a solid workstation inside the shed.

The design of your garden shed should take into account the type and amount of storage space you need. Storage spaces should be designed with your safety in mind such as shelves with sliding doors for heavier tools and drawers for the smaller ones.

2. Building Material

While you may have your personal preferences, your choice of material is largely dependent on your budget and environmental factors. The purpose of your shed is also an important input for your decision.

Many hobbyists like wooden sheds because they are easy to build on your own. If you want to use wood for your shed, you will need to find wood that is resistant to mould and termites. Other materials you could use are sheet metal and plastic panels. Metal and plastic are not affected by vermin need special construction to protect you from the cold in winter and summer heat.

If you choose to use metal or plastic panels, you may need to consult or hire some experienced personnel to help you do the job correctly.

3. Foundations

Many people forget to ask their contractors whether the rate offered for the garden shed includes the construction of a foundation. The choice of building a foundation depends on the purpose of your shed and the type of soil in your yard.

You can consult your contractors or neighbours to have an idea of what kind of foundation would be ideal for your site. Some sites may require you to break the ground and build a solid concrete foundation while others only need you to lay a few planks of wood to keep the garden shed dry.

These factors are good to consider whether you are looking to build your garden shed in Penrith or any other part of the country. The purpose, material and foundation of your shed are fundamental factors that can generate extra costs if you don’t think about them early in the shed design process.

  • I just want to advise you of the terrific service one of your shed builders provided to us when last week he built the shed we ordered through your Penrith office. Dave and his young helper provided first class workmanship, he was very polite, and the clean up was a pleasure compared to most other tradesmen. We are soon going to order a further shed via Penrith and I have no hesitation in recommending your products. Thank you Dave, and thank you to Col Western Sheds.
